|| 🕉gan ganpataye namo namah || Today being sankasti, the day dedicated to vighnaharta 🙏🏼 A day of fasting that I started to keep 15 years ago.. missed to keep several (fastings)chaturtis after I had my twins🍒 It feels so nice to get back to a routine that I left out.. So today I made a fasting idli😋
Although I kept upvas[fasting] with drinking only water on sankasti before pregnancy.. it is hard to keep the same now😅 but, bhakti is still the same🙏🏼
One can keep Sankasti by not eating rice till chandrodaya and break the fast after praying the moon🌙 and then consume a meal with rice. There is something magical about fasting😇
🌸🌼Happy Sankasti 🐘
So here is a detailed recipe to make this RAVA IDLI that can be eaten on a fasting day:
Rava Idli | Fasting Idli | Idli with Suji | Bombay Rava Idli
Ingredients
- White lentils (urad dal) - 1 cup
- Methi/Fenugreek- 1 tsp
- Medium Rava - 2 cups
- Salt - as per taste
- Water - approximately 1 to 1 and half cups
Instructions
- Wash and soak 1 cup of Urad dal and methi seeds in water for at least 4 hours.
- Meanwhile, take 2 cups of coarse rava[suji] in a cotton cloth and tie it tightly like a potli.
- Boil some water in a steamer and steam the tied Rava potli in the steamer for 10 minutes.
- Open the potli and smash the rava with a spatula or a spoon and let it cool down.
- Grind the urad dal with enough water to make a thick batter.
- When the Rava/Suji has cooled down, mix it with the urad dal batter.
- Mix thoroughly without leaving any lumps.
- Then add the required amount of water. [I added 1 cup of water]
- Close and keep for fermentation for 8 hrs.
- The next day add salt and make idlis in a steamer by steaming for 10 minutes.
- Enjoy with Ginger chutney or Hing Chutney.
Notes
- While choosing rava/suji to make this idli, always choose medium / coarse rava.
- Take a thick cotton cloth to steam the rava, otherwise, rava may stick to the fabric/cloth!
- These idlis can be made on fasting days or even on any day and enjoyed with some ginger chutney and chai 🙂
