Alva Panna Alvati[Alvati curry prepared using tender leaves of colocasia]. This is a special amchigele dish prepared specially during the end of the monsoon.
As we were harvesting the corn at the end of its season, this dish was a must! I have eaten many varieties of alwathi and this is the basic curry prepared with corn on the cob, colocasia leaves, and groundnuts. Topped with coconut oil, eaten with a hot bowl of white rice. Here is a detailed video recipe with steps to prepare alvathi:
Alwathi With Homegrown Corn & Colocasia Leaves
Ingredients
- Fresh Corn on the cob - 2
- Colocasia leaves with stem- 2 to 3 cups
- Peanuts/Groundnut- 1/2 cup- Soaked in water
- Freshly grated coconut- 3/4th cup
- Dry Red Chillies- 4 to 5
- Tamarind- 2 inches
- Turmeric Powder- little
- Salt -as per taste
Instructions
Pre preparations for the curry:
Chop corn on the cob about 2-inch pieces
Soak Groundnuts/Peanuts for at least 1 hour in hot water
Chop the alva/colocasia leaves and its stem and keep aside.
In a Cooker add chopped corn pieces, chopped colocasia leaves, and soaked groundnuts, a little salt. Then cook for 1 whistle or till the corn is cooked thoroughly.
To prepare curry masol:
In a mixer jar take dry red chilies, freshly grated coconut, tamarind, and a little turmeric powder and grind to a smooth paste.
Now in a pan, combine pressure cooked veggies and ground masala, mix evenly. Adjust salt.
Close and cook on medium flame till the masol is cooked.
Top it with a little coconut oil. Serve hot with rice, chapati, or dosa.
Notes
- Some people also add a little bit of jaggery to this dish. Its totally optional.
- As we know that colocasia leaves can be itchy. Choose the most tender leaves to avoid the itch!
- Also, we can substitute tamarind with hog plums(ambodo) or bimbul, or star fruit.
- We can add cooked jackfruit seeds, cooked fresh bamboo shoots to this curry as a substitute for groundnuts.
- Finally, this curry can be seasoned with oil, mustard, curry leaves OR coconut oil, crushed garlic. Or even without season, it tastes great!
