Tawa Pav Bhaji

Pav Bhaji is a famous street food that is so popular and can be made easily at home with very little ingredients.

Here I have made a version of pav bhaji prepared on a tawa just like how the famous mumbai street style vendors make. The taste of all the spices that gets cooked, mashed and combined with all the home grown goodness makes it irresistible!

Given below is a detailed video and step by step written recipe on how to make this famous mumbai style tawa pav bhaji:

Ingredients

To Make Bhaji:

  • Green Peas- ½ cup[boiled]
  • Potatoes- 1 [boiled & mashed]
  • Butter- 4 Tbsp
  • Onion- 1[finely chopped]
  • Ginger-Garlic paste- ½ tsp
  • Tomatoes-2[finely chopped]
  • Capsicum/Bell Pepper-½ [finely chopped]
  • Kashmiri red chilli powder / lal mirch powder-¼ tsp
  • Pav Bhaji Masala Powder- 1 tsp+½ tsp
  • Coriander Leaves [finely chopped]
  • ½ lemon juice

To Toast Pav:

  • 8 Pav / Bread Roll
  • Butter
  • Pav bhaji masala powder
  • Coriander Leaves

Instructions

  1. To prepare the bhaji, first, we need to cook the green peas and potatoes in a cooker for 1 whistle.
  2. As the recipe is prepared on a tawa, I have used a big flat round tawa.
  3. Heat a tawa on a medium flame. Add 2 TBSP butter and a little oil on the tawa.
  4. As the butter melts, add finely chopped onions and saute nicely.
  5. Then add ginger-garlic paste. Mix and saute till its raw smell is gone.
  6. Now add finely chopped tomato. Fry till the tomatoes become mushy and leave oil.
  7. To this add a little salt, red chilly powder, pav bhaji masala powder, and mix nicely.
  8. Take a masher and mash all the vegetables that are being cooked on the tawa.
  9. Now make a hole at the center of the tawa and add boiled peas and potatoes. Mash and mix everything to form a smooth masala.
  10. Mix everything and make one more hole and add a little oil. Put finely chopped capsicum pieces and saute nicely. Mash everything well and combine it nicely.
  11. This will form a thick masala. So now use the boiled peas water or normal water to mix with it and make it a smooth running consistency.
  12. bring to a boil and switch off the flame.
  13. Transfer it to a bowl and garnish with some coriander leaves and butter.

To Prepare pav :

  1. On the same tawa add a little butter, pav bhaji masala powder, coriander leaves and place the slit pav buns on it.
  2. Press the pav on the tawa using hands or a turner.
  3. Fry on both sides. Take out on a place and how to serve?

Serve tossed pav with prepared bhaji, topping with chopped raw onions, some coriander leaves, and lemon juice. Serve as a breakfast, snack, or even as a complete meal!

Notes

  • The same bhaji can be prepared in a kadai or large vessel. Take care to choose a heavy-bottomed flat vessel to make mashing the veggies easier.
  • always cook the vegetables and mash properly so that the pav bhaji masala turns out exactly as a pav bhaji vendor makes.
  • Don't skip the butter if you want the authentic pav bhaji at home.
